"Dorothy is by far one of the best tutors I have come across in our home education journey. Both of my children have been enthusiastic to attend her lessons, which is a credit to her wonderful warm personality and gentle, yet effective, teaching style. All lessons are well planned, communication and organisation excellent and overall excellent results for my children. An A* tutor!" – L E

English - KS3 (ages 11-13)

In my KS3 groups, the emphasis is on a broad experience of the subject encompassing reading, writing, speaking and listening. We aim to discover the different genres of writing and to understand the craft of the writer. A lot of attention is given to

  • the uses and subtleties of words
  • reading for implicit and explicit meaning and
  • how to develop creativity in language.

Because I also teach English examination groups, I keep an eye on the skills they will need when embarking on future exam courses, but the KS3 stage is not the same as the exam stage. These years are for discovery, experience and delight in the language we share.
